Garage Rock is back! Meet Two Cow Garage

If you long for the days of garage bands who rock with unpolished abandon, you owe it to yourself to check out Two Cow Garage. From PunkNews.org, "The group was formed in September 2001 by singer/guitarist Micah Schnabel, who began playing with drummer Dustin Harigle in and around Columbus. Guitarist Chris Flint joined the group after seeing one of their early shows, and bassist Shane Sweeney followed soon after. The group released its first album in 2002 and embarked on a near-constant nationwide U.S. tour, clocking over 300,000 miles on their tour bus."
I heard some buzz, and did some research on them. I like what I hear. Sounds like a mix of alt-country, cow punk and good old fashioned rock and roll. I have included a link below for some free mp3's of the Garage and other mostly indie and alt-country tracks. I like the other band on there too, Drag the River. The Fest down in Florida is coming up very soon and Suburban Homes Records has put out a nice sampler of their bands involved in the shows. Enjoy!

Sarah Palin Hung in Effigy (Not a town in Nebraska)

West Hollywood Hangs Sarah Palin in Effigy

From the Wing Nut Right Wing blog Moonbattery:

"The homosexual community that festers in West Hollywood has expressed its class and its political sophistication in a single gesture by hanging Sarah Palin in effigy:

Palin-effigy.jpg

The excuse is that anything goes, with the Halloween Carnival coming soon. Somehow I doubt we'll be seeing BHO hanged if effigy in West Hollyweird, any more than we'll be seeing FBI and Secret Service investigations, like the ones that resulted when someone tied a cardboard effigy of The One to a tree at George Fox University last month."

Sarah Palin, when asked if she knew about the plan to hang her in effigy, stated:

"Well, that there Effigy is one town I am sure gonna stear clear of, ya know?"

No. They were too busy trying to scare you with immigration, tax cuts and our Iraqi invasion. Not much news on the abortion front.
They did nothing on the abortion issue, because it is a powerful tool to divide people. Why would they want to get rid of that? Immigration and terrorism have lost their luster as wedge issues. The old Republican trifecta of "fears, queers and smears" has seemed to have lost its luster as well.
This time out, why don't you vote for your own economic interests instead of putting more money into feeding the Republican fat cat machine by offering sweetheart deals and tax cuts, no bid contracts and other freebies. If you want to get rid of abortions, use your faith as a positive change by showing love, kindness and giving assistance to the women in need of help. That would be a much more effective way of lowering the abortion rate than calling people baby killers. I have been called a baby killer. I have never killed a baby. I brought two of the damn things into my house and they have gotten quite large and noisy. Who doesn't love a baby? Wake up and smell the stench that is the Republican Wedge Issue that is Abortion.

Death Wish Records Releases Fall Sampler and other Freebies

Hey. I love free samples of ANYTHING! And free music is at the top of the list. For hardcore fans, Death Wish Records has issued their fall sampler for free download at their website. There is a generous selection of 21 tracks featuring some of the best from their label. I am a geriatric (old guy) punk fan, so some of the modern hardcore (let's say post- Agnostic Front) is too hardcore. Am I getting old? I listen to it anyway, trying to keep up on the hardcore scene. I do admire the bands for rocking HARD! If you are a frequent visitor to this site, you know my tastes lean more toward tuneful SoCal punk, but I still raise my fist to these hardcore soldiers!
For indie fans, or if hardcore is too unsettling for you, the band Sleep Station has released free mp3s just for promising to vote! No you don't have to register to vote to get the tunes or anything. Just click and download. These guys are accoustic, tuneful and well-crafted songwriters definitely worth a listen. http://www.eyeballrecords.com and http://www.deathwishinc.com/files/dw2008fallsampler.zip

Against Me Involved in Bus Accident on Current Tour

Against Me! Involved in Bus Accident
Against Me! was involved in a bus while traveling between dates in Denver, Colorado and Salt Lake City, Utah last night. Tom Gabel discussed yesterday's bus accident on his blog: “Everyone was asleep when it happened. I didn't want to wake up. Moments before I was sleeping so deeply. I was annoyed. I woke to the sound of my friends screaming, various expletives, inarticulate gasps, the sensation of spinning, and the sound of crashing inside and outside the bus. My eyes opened to blackness. I immediately pressed my hands and feet into the roof of my bunk as hard as I could, bracing for what I did not know.”

The band is currently touring with Ted Leo and the Pharmacists and Future of the Left. The show in Salt Lake City was cancelled but there is no word yet on if further tour dates will be postponed.
New Solo Album from Front man Tom Gabel
Tom Gabel of Against Me! has posted a stream of his new full length, Heart Burns. You can check out the entirety of the EP here. It is due for release on October 28, 2008.He has also unveiled the fourth in a series of videos to coincide with tracks on the upcoming EP.
Other news
Against Me! drummer Warren Oakes recently spoke to Billboard about their plans for the rest of the year. According to Warren:
“I know Tom [Gabel] has been writing this whole time. We'll probably take a little holiday break, then just get together and start collaborating and start fleshing those songs out and work on writing for most of the early part of next year. We'll probably do some shows some time in the spring, perhaps; to road test some of those new songs.
We'll get in the studio when the time is right, when we have a batch of songs that are ready to go. The biggest pressure that's ever been put on this band has come internally, every step of the way. So we're just gonna take the time to get it right.”

Rep. Robin Hayes (R) NC- "Liberals hate real Americans"

Robin.Hayes
Originally uploaded by environmentamerica

Republican Rep. Robin Hayes of North Carolina brought us this bit of high brow political thought at a McCain rally over the weekend: "liberals hate real Americans that work and achieve and believe in God."
Now we also get to see and hear Randy Kuhl (R-NY) say on camera that he "firmly believes" that Democrats want the American People to suffer and to hurt." Here's the exact quote:

"I firmly believe the Democratic majority wants the American public to suffer and to hurt so that they can make some political gains at election time, and I think that's wrong."

I am a liberal. I do not hate real Americans. I don't even hate this knuckle-dragging chucklehead. I work hard. I try to achieve. I even believe in God and attend church. I do not want to see the American people suffer (like they have the last 8 years). So there...

His remarks came shortly after he had said he would "make sure we don't say something stupid, make sure we don't say something we don't mean." Let's give him a do-over, shall we?

Canadian Punkers Propagandhi Set to Release New CD

From the time I heard the opening chords of "Back to the Motor League" a few years ago, I knew I loved these guys. Hailing from Winnipeg, MB., these guys rock HARD. I used to live on the US side of the border, in Park River, North Dakota. I can safely say Manitoba has not been known as a hotbed of punk, but these guys come by it naturally. Word has it the new disc will be released on Fat Wreck Chords as early as March. Hail Hail Prairie Punk! I can't wait.

Dead To Me Releases mp3 off New CD

The track is entitled "Little Brother", and you can get to it on Fat Wreck Chords' website. There are a lot of great mp3's on there, so stick around and sample a lot of great bands.

Dead to Me's new track is called "Little Brother" and features some Clash-like experimentation with non-punk elements such as reggae. Not as hard edged as their earlier material, but that's not a bad thing. One doesn't have to thrash all the time... I first heard these guys on their 2006 release "Cuban Ballerina" and liked their old school approach to punk. I am looking forward to hearing more of the new as yet unnamed EP.

Al Franken the Maverick and Other Election Season Funnies

"I will vote no for certain things, even if 85 senators vote for it. ... I guess, maybe I'm just, I don't know, a maverick," Franken said,
  • John McCain; "I'm Not President Bush". Odd, but McCain voted with Bush 95 percent of the time. (Mitchell Bard- Huffington Post).
  • We seem not to mind socialist for the rich -- or for Congress. (Erica Jong)
  • Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., ranks no. 19 of the 100 United States senators in terms of personal wealth, according to a new analysis of personal-finance disclosure reports by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics. The Center estimated McConnell's 2007 net worth at about $7.8 million. Much of McConnell's fortune comes from his marriage to Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao, who has spent time in the worlds of banking and corporate boards, and whose father is a wealthy shipping magnate in New York. He still attacks Bruce Lundsford as a fat cat. At least Bruce did some honest work to get his money.
  • This is the first race since Watergate that the Republicans have been so desperate that they've had to use plumbers... (Charlie Cray- Huffington Post)

Musicians on the Mend - Travis Barker and Jim James

We hope for Jim's quick recovery and to be back out on the road soon." Jim is recovering from a fall from a stage in Iowa last week.

Here is a note from Travis Barker, who is recovering from an airplane crash in South Carolina that killed four:

"Like the doctors said from the beginning, its been a slow recovery process. I am coming up on the 7th of my surgeries Monday. Today I finally was able to move all my fingers on my right hand. Every step seems huge at this point, and Im doing EVERYTHING I can possibly do to get back to my kids. Yes, I did start eating meat again, but if it helps me to be home holding my little humans sooner, then its all worth it. The staff here are all bomb! Dr. Grossman and his staff are the best... Despite any rumors you might have heard, Ive been treated amazingly well, both here in LA and in Georgia. The hospitals Ive been treated at are THE BEST... I got to see AM the other day. Seeing him after he was discharged was an inspiration. I saw just how awesome the doctors' work here is, and got to see how well he is doing. I am so happy to see him doing well, and we are both so lucky and grateful that we are alive today. "

DIY Folkster Michael McNevin has New CD in the Works

If you have never heard or heard of Michael McNevin, you owe it to yourself to check him out. I first got to see him in concert in Elkhart Indiana back in the early 90's. he did a one man show that just held you in awe. His accoustic guitar virtuosity, laid back approach and great songwriting kept the audience in the palm of his hand. The songs tell great stories, and his banter between songs linked them all together. His new CD will be released early next year, and is tentatively called "Kicking Tires". A tour of the US is scheduled as well. I hope he does a show somewhere in the midwest, as I plan to be there. He lives and tours primarily in the Northern California area.

I Couldn't Resist

"They had the town hall format, and that meant that the candidates could wander around on stage. You know, I like John McCain, but wandering around on stage there, he looked like a retiree who can't find his Buick." --David Letterman
"At one point referred to Barack Obama as 'that one.' And McCain later thought maybe something had gone haywire. He apologized, he said he got confused, he thought he was at the bakery." –David Letterman
"Are you excited about Sarah Palin? Well, yesterday she referred to Afghanistan as our neighboring country. Apparently, she can see bin Laden's cave from her house." --David Letterman
"Sarah Palin, Miss Alaska, is saying she doesn't know who Barack Obama really is. That's interesting because she also doesn't know who Sarkozy is, Gordon Brown, Kim Jong-Il, Hugo Chavez, Vladimir Putin, Osama bin Laden." --David Letterman
"It got a little heated at one point during the debate. McCain talked about experience and he said, 'We don't have time for on-the-job training.' Then why did you pick Sarah Palin?" --Jay Leno
"Well, because of all the international focus on the election, last night's debate was broadcast in foreign countries all across Europe, Asia, and South America, or, as Sarah Palin calls them, Russia." --Conan O'Brien
"And the only really new proposal last night came from John McCain. McCain proposed buying up bad homeowner mortgages. Not to save the middle class. You know McCain, he just likes buying houses." --Jay Leno
"The second presidential debate is tonight. And beforehand, I don't know if you heard this, John McCain said, 'The gloves are coming off.' That's what he said, yeah. Yeah, then McCain said, 'but don't worry, the diaper is staying on.'" --Conan O'Brien
"In Boca Raton, Florida, yesterday, a woman who looked like Sarah Palin caused a near riot when she walked into a diner for breakfast. But after a minute or two, people finally realized it wasn't her when she started answering questions." --Jay Leno
"Of course, the most controversial thing Sarah Palin said last night was she felt the vice president should have more power. More power? Dick Cheney is shooting people in the face and doesn't even get arrested. You cannot get any more powerful than that." --Jay Leno
"President Bush's response to this economic crisis was to meet with some small business owners at a soda shop in San Antonio, Texas, this week. Well, the bad news? The small business owners are now General Motors, General Electric, and Century 21." --Jay Leno

I-Spy: The NSA Does it Again

I-Spy

From the newsletter of the ACLU:
"Reports all over the media yesterday and today confirm what we’ve known all along. Surveillance programs touted as critical to protect national security have in fact been used to monitor the private communications of innocent Americans abroad, including humanitarian workers and U.S. service-members.

Two former military intercept operators -- the people at the National Security Agency (NSA) who actually listen in to people’s calls -- revealed the news in an ABC report released yesterday.

Contrary to direct assurances from Bush administration officials that NSA monitoring was directed at suspected terrorists, the intercept operators report that "hundreds of U.S. citizens overseas have been eavesdropped on as they call friends and family back home."

The NSA even intentionally directed its surveillance powers at well-established humanitarian organizations like Doctors Without Borders and the International Red Cross.

It is outrageous that service men and women and international aid workers have had their private conversations needlessly and wantonly invaded by our government.

That is why the ACLU’s lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Congress’s expansion of the NSA’s surveillance authority under the FISA Amendments Act is so critical. Our case, Amnesty International v. McConnell -- brought on behalf of an impressive array of journalists, human rights organizations and lawyers -- shines a spotlight on the devastating effect of unchecked spying power on Americans doing indispensable work around the globe."
It’s more important than ever that you support the ACLU’s lawsuit and other actions challenging out-of-control government spying.
Just as we warned -- and as our FISA lawsuit contends -- the NSA’s new unchecked surveillance powers invade the privacy of innocent Americans and fundamentally undermine human rights workers, journalists and attorneys doing important work around the globe. This dragnet spying is ineffective, intrusive, unnecessary and most certainly unconstitutional.
Donate now to support the ACLU’s lawsuit and put an end to out-of-control government eavesdropping.
The FISA Amendments Act -- rushed through a timid pre-election Congress -- gives the government nearly unfettered access to Americans’ international communications without any meaningful judicial oversight.
As this week’s news demonstrates, with unchecked and unaccountable spying powers, NSA officials will quickly run amok."

New from The Clash - "Live at Shea Stadium"

1982- The Clash were on the verge of superstardom and on the verge of disintigration. Captured here is a nice document to the band's live show. There is a mixture of early material and stuff from the "Rock the Casbah" era. All of the tracks have a freshness and energy to them that makes me remember again what the buzz was all about. My one gripe is the truncated version of "Magnificent Seven" that they do. It seems like they started in the middle of the song. Other than that, I have no complaints about this one. Unlike other live albums released after the fact, case in point Husker Du "The LIving End", this is not just an attempt to recycle poorly recorded material that otherwise wouldn't see the light of day. Listening to it makes me remember a time when music was important, and not as formulaic. The Clash took punk into a myriad of different styles, and it still sounds fresh today. This cd is a worthy testament to the iconic band's live show. Since the stock market is now back to the values of the early 80's, turn your musical clock back as well! This cd is highly recommended! AOL is offering a live stream of the disc on their site right now. Give it a spin and you will want to own it.

My Morning Jacket Leader Jim James Injured in Fall

Here is what I found from the Des Moines Register
"IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) _ Singer and guitarist Jim James of the rock group My Morning Jacket has been injured in a fall during a concert at the University of Iowa.
Reports say he slipped and fell about 30 minutes into the show Tuesday night, apparently hitting his head in the fall, which happened between songs. James was taken to a hospital, but the extent of his injuries was not known. The band's four other members left the stage seconds after James fell.Drummer Patrick Hallahan returned several minutes later to say James fell and his injury was being assessed. Hallahan and the other band members returned to the stage to say the show was canceled."
Let's hope he recovers soon. They are on quite a roll now with the new album and tour. They are scheduled for a New Years Eve gig at Madison Square Garden. Get well soon!

And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead

According to their website, Austin- based ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead confirms they are soon to release some new material. It's done, it doesn't have a title or any artwork (yet) and it's coming out on the boys' own Justice Records imprint Richter Scale Records.
There's an EP too called "Festival Thyme" coming out on October 21st. They have been playing a few shows with My Bloody Valentine as of late, but currently no information on a tour for the new album. I hooked on these guys during the Madonna album and Source Tags and Codes. Interesting music full of drama and dynamics. Can't wait for the new cd.

The last two were both killed by drivers breaking the law, passing on the wrong side of the road, drunken driving, etc.
MURDER in my humble opinion. Until we start sharing the road, these tragedies will continue. I have ridden all over this fair city of Louisville, and for the most part, drivers are civilized road partners. I won't mention the 2nd Street Bridge, which scares the living hell out of me, but otherwise, I feel pretty safe around here.
What I do not like is the cavalier attitude of the police and media about cycle-car accidents. As we make strides to be more cycle-friendly, these attitudes must change. Any driver who strikes a cyclist and breaks the law should be prosectuted to the full extent of the law. We owe it to the victims.

Say Hi To Your Mom Tour Dates

If you haven't heard this band(?) or guy (?) you owe it to yourself to do so. Originally named "Say Hi To Your Mom", they have shortened it to just "Say Hi". Eric Elbogen is the one man tour-de-force behind Say Hi. Most of the material is lo-fi, recorded on a home-made computer in his home, Eric often plays solo, or with a small ensemble.
The songwriting is first rate, very sincere and with a wry sense of humor. I heard a free mp3 of Say Hi and was hooked. I then downloaded the rest of the catalog from eMusic.
Say Hi to this great indie-pop-lofi rock outfit. You'll be glad you did.
